Glen W. Bell was convinced that people wanted a fast service alternative to hamburgers. In 1962, he opened the first Taco Bell in Downey, Calif. Glen Bell was right! People loved the alternative of Mexican Food. They enjoyed the fresh and simple menu choices and word began to spread.

With the help of franchisees, Taco Bell began to expand throughout the United States, bringing the taste of Mexican food to an unfamiliar public, who accepted it eagerly. In 1978, Taco Bell was acquired by Pepsico, Inc., one of the world's largest and best known corporations. Taco Bell became a dynamic part of the Pepsico family, which included Pepsi-Cola, Frito-Lay, Pizza Hut and Kentucky Fried Chicken.

In October 1997, Taco Bell, Pizza Hut and Kentucky Fried Chicken spun off from PepsiCo to become the world's largest restaurant system, YUM!Brands, a Fortune 150 Company based in Louisville, KY. In 2003 YUM!Brands acquired Long John Silver's and A&W Restaurant Corps.

Taco Bell is by far the leader of Mexican fast food restaurant category by almost every measurable ranking. Taco Bell leads in system-wide sales (10.0 billion), number of restaurants (7000) and market share (greater than 75%). In the restaurant chain category, Taco Bell consistently ranks in the top five in system-wide sales and top five in number of units. This success has been accomplished by providing consistently high quality products through the efforts of thousands of dedicated Taco Bell employees.

What began as a simple desire to have a Taco Bell Restaurant in Martinsville, Virginia in 1987 is now a multi-million dollar sales organization. Tacoma, a franchisee of the Taco Bell Corporation, a franchisee of the Long John Silver's Corporation and a licensee of Pizza Hut Corporation, owns and operates 24 Taco Bell locations, five Pizza Hut Express locations and two Long John Silver's locations throughout Southwest and Central Virginia.
