Taco Bell History
Glen W. Bell was convinced that people wanted a fast service alternative to hamburgers. In 1962, he opened the first Taco Bell in Downey, Calif. Glen Bell was right! People loved the alternative of Mexican Food. They enjoyed the fresh and simple menu choices and word began to spread. With the help of franchisees, Taco Bell began to expand throughout the United States, bringing the taste of Mexican food to an unfamiliar public, who accepted it eagerly. In 1978, Taco Bell was acquired by Pepsico, Inc., one of the world's largest and best known corporations. Taco Bell became a dynamic part of the Pepsico family, which included Pepsi-Cola, Frito-Lay, Pizza Hut and Kentucky Fried Chicken. In October 1997, Taco Bell, Pizza Hut and Kentucky Fried Chicken spun off from PepsiCo to become the world's largest restaurant system, YUM!Brands, a Fortune 150 Company based in Louisville, KY. In 2003 YUM!Brands acquired Long John Silver's and A&W Restaurant Corps. Taco Bell is by far the leader of Mexican fast food restaurant category by almost every measurable ranking.
